Chandrayaan 3 enters into the Lunar orbit Successfully – ISRO

Chandrayaan 3 succesfully entered into the lunar orbit on Saturday – ISRO

By Infinity Byte: Chandrayaan 3 sends message to ISRO as it reached the moon’s orbit. This is the most awaited moment of Indians. This spacecraft covers two – thirds of distance to moon.

Chandrayaan 3 Mission

Spacecraft is expected to land on Moon on Aug 23. After 22 days of leaving the earth on July 14th, Chandrayaan 3 injected into the moon’s orbit. Lunar orbit injection was set for 7PM on August 5.

From the Perilune, which is the closest approach to the moon that an orbiting body makes. It has fired one of its thrusters and the Chandrayaan 3 spacecraft from the Srihari Kota has successfully entered into the moon’s orbit.

A step ahead for Chandrayaan 3 Goal

The above image is just the depiction of how the Chandrayaan orbiter will orbit the moon in closer and closer orbits eventually where it will come to a position where it will be able to deploy its lander and land on the moon. So this is the big step in the goal of Chandrayaan 3 to land on the moon .

There is a Lander and Rover of Chandrayaan 3 , it will take couple of concentric orbits of the moon. Eventually the radius of the orbit decreases and it will be at a position where it is at the right speed and it is at the right altitude from where it can begin its descent. So this is a series of gravitation assisted moves the chandrayaan is making inching closer and closer to the lunar surface.

How Chandrayaan-3 Mission is different from its predecessor

The significance about Chandrayaan-3 mission, unlike its unsuccessful predecessor, is that the Propulsion Module has a payload — SHAPE — Spectro- polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth which is to study earth from lunar orbit.

The ISRO said the SHAPE is an experimental payload to study the Spectro-polarimetric signatures of the Earth in the near-infrared wavelength range.

Apart from the SHAPE payload, the Propulsion Module’s main function is to carry the Lander Module from launch vehicle injection orbit till lander separation.

The Lander Module after landing on the surface of the moon has payloads including RAMBHA-LP which is to measure the near surface plasma ions and electrons density and its changes, ChaSTE Chandra’s Surface Thermo Physical Experiment — to carry out the measurements of thermal properties of lunar surface near polar region– and ILSA (Instrument for Lunar Seismic Activity) to measure seismicity around the landing site and delineating the structure of the lunar crust and mantle.

The rover, after the soft-landing, would come out of the Lander Module and study the surface of the moon through its payloads APXS – Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer

Chandrayaan-3 Mission: How significant it is for India

If Chandrayaan-3 succeeds in landing a robotic lunar rover, India will become the fourth country to master the technology of soft-landing on the moon’s surface after the US, China, and the former Soviet Union. Chandrayaan-3 is ISRO’s second attempt in four years. Chandrayaan’s maiden mission was in 2008. The second moon craft mission, Chandrayaan-2 failed in its lunar phase when its lander ‘Vikram’ crashed into the surface of the moon following anomalies in the braking system in the lander while attempting a soft landing on September 7, 2019

Chandrayaan 3’s message to ISRO

Chandrayaan-3, India’s third unmanned Moon mission yesterday entered the lunar orbit, 22 days after it was launched for a far more complicated 41-day voyage to reach the lunar south pole where no other nation has gone before.

After reaching the lunar’s orbit, Chandrayaan messaged ISRO saying, “I am feeling lunar gravity”.The ISRO shared a message from the satellite to its centers, which read,” MOX, ISTRAC, this is Chandrayaan-3. I am feeling lunar gravity”.
